“The Cliff”

What is more important to America; The fiscal cliff (which may or may not happen) or the headlong jump over the “moral cliff” with the resulting nose dive into the pit of unspeakable sins and eventual destruction?

As of today (November 17, 2012), we are hearing a lot from the news media about the fiscal cliff we are approaching at the end of 2012.  This seems to be an important matter to most Americans.  It is sad that we do not hear nearly as much about the moral cliff we plunged over at some point in the past.  Rest assured we are not approaching this moral cliff but America is in a free –fall morally.  What proof do we offer?

The high divorce rate in America; removal of prayer from the public schools and now from almost all government offices; Roe vs. Wade “legalizing” abortion; the promotion of homosexuality as a normal lifestyle; the epidemic of alcohol and drug abuse; neglect and abuse of children and the elderly; greed which has resulted in millions losing their pensions and life savings; the acceptance of pre-marital sex and extra-marital sex as a normal way of life; the explosion of “legalized gambling” which has resulted in the ruin of many individuals and families; the hateful attitude of many in our society toward the God of the Bible; the deliberate attempt  to remove any references to God from all aspects of American society; etc.

What is happening in America is no secret.  We are simply reaping what we have sown.  How can a nation, any nation, turn their back on God Almighty and hope to flourish and prosper?

“Righteousness exalteth a nation: but sin is a reproach to any people” (Proverbs 14:34).

Many will read this and say, “We don’t care what God says; keep your religion to yourself”.  My dear friend, can you not see that that is the problem?  How can we have morality without God? By what standard do we live without God and His word? Is it not more than mere coincidence that our plunge into self-destruction began when we started moving away from God? Please don’t tell me that things are fine in our country!

Here is a sampling of our nation:

“As many as 17 million children nationwide are struggling with what is known as food insecurity.” (ABC News, August 24, 2011) (Food insecurity = they don’t have enough to eat! L.B.)  http://abcnews.go.com/US/hunger_at_home/hunger-home-american-children-malnourished/story?id=14367230

It is estimated that there are 1.3 million abortions performed in America each year; and 43 million throughout the world (Wikianswers.com) http://wiki.answers.com/Q/How_many_abortions_per_year_in_the_US

(I heard a fine lesson on Wednesday, November 14, 2012, by a member of the Braggs church of Christ on moral issues in America.  I wish everyone in America could have heard his lesson.)

There are over 3 million reports of child abuse in America each year http://www.childhelp.org/pages/statistics

It is reported that over 17 million Americans are alcoholics or have alcohol related problems http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/alcoholism.html

Over 22 million Americans use drugs illegallyhttp://thechart.blogs.cnn.com/2011/09/08/study-22-million-americans-use-ilegal-drugs-3

Sexually transmitted diseases are epidemic in America. http://www.cdc.gov/STD/stats10/foreword.htm

Pornography is a terrible problem in our nation. http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2009/feb/24/porn-at-work/

A lot more could be said about the moral mess our nation is in!

Immorality is out of control. God has spoken concerning right and wrong!

Murder (abortion) is wrong – Rom. 13:9

Alcohol destroys body and soul – Proverbs 23:31-32; Hab. 2:15; 1 Cor. 10:31

Dishonesty is wrong (lying, gambling, etc.) – Rom. 13:9; Mt. 7:12; Rom. 12:17; Col. 3:9

Drugs destroy body and soul – Ga. 5:19-21; Rom. 12:1-2

Homosexuality is a sin – 1 Cor. 6:9-11

Pornography –Rom. 1:26-32; 1 Cor. 6:18

Television, movies, videos that portray adultery, murder, cursing, lying, dishonesty, impure thoughts and actions, etc. are wrong – Mt.12:34-37; Gal. 5:19-21

Proverbs 13:34 still states, ““Righteousness exalteth a nation: but sin is a reproach to any people”

Jesus wants man to turn to Him in obedience to His will. “Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light” (Mt. 11:28-30). He does not desire that any soul be lost. “The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance” (2 Pet. 3:9). “For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour; Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth” (1 Tim. 2:3-4).
