Text — Titus 2:4 – “That they may teach the young women to be sober, to love their husbands, to love their children”
Abortion and infanticide (the practice of killing newborn infants) were common when Paul wrote the book of Titus. Women then, just like today, need to be taught that this is wrong – it is murder. Mothers also needed instruction on how to raise a child. Rearing a child requires teaching and training the child in the way God wants them to live. It requires constant supervision and discipline to help the child develop a respect for authority and the ability to control self. Spoiling a child and letting a child go his own way is not an act of love; in reality it is an act of hatred. If mothers (and fathers) truly love their children they will put for every effort to bring them up “in the nurture and admonition of the Lord”. Therefore, we can see that the younger women needed teaching from the older women in this most important work of raising a family.
