Bible Reading Schedule with Lessons – Jan. 1-5

Date: Wednesday, Jan.1

Passage: Mt. 1

Lesson: This chapter deals with the genealogy of Jesus and His birth. One great lesson from this passage is found in verse 24. Here we find that Joseph “did as the angel of the Lord had bidden him”.  With all the things that happened, Joseph was focused on doing the will of God.  Let us do likewise.  (Mt. 7:21)

Date: Thursday, Jan. 2

Passage: Mt. 2

Lesson: Herod had commanded the wise men to return to Jerusalem and let him know where he could find the baby Jesus.  God instructed them not to return to Herod and they obeyed His will.  We too must obey God and not men.  (Acts 5:29)

Date: Friday, Jan. 3

Passage: Mt. 3

Lesson: Some fail to understand the baptism of fire mentioned in this chapter.  It is reported that some even pray for the baptism of fire.  It refers to eternal punishment in hell and it is something we should strive to avoid with all our being.  (Mt. 7:13-14)

Date: Saturday, Jan 4

Passage: Mt. 4

Lesson: The devil tempted Jesus through the lust of the flesh, the pride of life and the lust of the eyes.  The devil tempts us through the same avenues today.  Let us ever be on guard against the wiles of the devil as he works to draw us into sin.  (1 Jn. 2:15-17; 1 Cor. 10:13)

Date: Sunday, Jan. 5

Passage: Mt. 5:1-26

Lesson: In verses 21-22 Jesus deals with anger and its terrible consequences.  Someone has written, “Jesus condemns the harsh, sinful attitude of anger that expresses itself in hostile words of contempt.”  (Eph. 4:26)
