Bible reading with lessons – Jan. 6-12

6          Monday

Passage: Mt. 5:27-48

Lesson: Verses 33-37 deal with taking an oath.  “One should never use oaths in common conversation. A Christian does not have to reinforce his word with any oath or other device.” (Col. 4:6)

7          Tuesday

Passage: Mt. 6:1-18

Lesson: Three important points are covered in this section: (1) almsgiving or benevolent acts (2) prayer and (3) fasting.   We must do benevolent deeds and pray – fasting is not binding but may be done if we so choose.  The great lesson is that we must not do these to receive praise from men.  We must do these to please God! (Gal. 1:10)

8          Wednesday

Passage: Mt. 6:19-34

Lesson: Our priority should be laying up treasures in heaven.  “Treasures in heaven are safe. These are spiritual in nature and eternal in scope; they are reserved in

Heaven.” (1 Pet. 1:3-5)

9          Thursday

Passage: Mt. 7

Lesson: The people were astonished at his teaching. (vs. 28).  Why?  They were astonished not by his delivery of the message but by the message itself – by the amazing truths He taught!

10        Friday

Passage: Mt. 8:1-17

Lesson: Chapters 8 and 9 deal with the miracles of Jesus.   Verse 17 indicates His work was the fulfillment of prophecy (Is. 53). Jesus healed many of physical ailments – but His greatest work was providing for our spiritual healing – forgiveness – by dying upon the cross.

11        Saturday

Passage: Mt. 8:18-34

Lesson: Read verse 20.  “The Lord was dependent on others for the provision of day-to-day needs of food and shelter. We frequently find Christ eating and sleeping in the houses of various people. But was he worried about the future? Should we be?” (Mk. 10:29-30)

12        Sunday

Passage: Mt. 9:1-17

Lesson: What did the miracles of Jesus prove?  That He had authority to teach these new truths (Jn. 3:1-2).  He taught with authority (Mt. 5-7) and acted with authority – the miracles confirmed His teaching.
