New Testament Christians are commanded in Jude 3 to “earnestly contend for the faith”.
The “faith” referred to is the one gospel (Gal. 1:23; Phil. 1:27; 1 Tim. 6:10; Acts 6:7). So we are to contend for the gospel of Jesus Christ as revealed in the New Testament. To “contend earnestly” means we are to stand up for and defend the word of God. When someone teaches something opposed to the Scriptures we must oppose it with the truth, with the Word of God, with book, chapter and verse. When our civil government passes laws contrary to God’s word then we must speak out against these laws. PLEASE NOTE that we do so with the Word of God. There is no authority for N.T. Christians to use any type of physical violence in defending the truth of God’s Word (2 Cor.10:4-5; Phil. 1:27).
As an example, we now have rulings from our government which support same-sex marriages as “legal”. This promotes homosexuality, perverts the God given plan for marriage and will destroy the home as God would have it to be. Some in authority then tell us that to speak against same-sex marriage is a “hate crime”! It is amazing to me that those who promote and support same-sex marriages have a “right” to do so, but God fearing people have no right to oppose it!
This is only one example of the laws of man that are in opposition to the laws of God; abortion, legalized gambling, divorce for any cause, etc. are some other examples.
Where does this leave the Christian in light of Jude 3; are we to defend the truth or defect and become spiritual AWOL?
The faithful child of God must teach against all evil whether supported by the government or not. However, this is to be done with “the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God” (Eph. 6:17). We do this by presenting the truth through teaching and preaching God’s word – by “speaking the truth in love” (Eph. 4:25).
