Women in six states may now go topless “legally”???. By Leon Brashear

This recent ruling by the U.S. 10th Circuit Court of Appeals is just one more sign of how far the morals of America have strayed from the Word of God.  The women’s liberation movement has done great harm to our families and to the church – perhaps more harm than many realize.  It is one of many movements where men desire to have their “rights” in spite of whether or not it is pleasing to God in heaven.

Solomon wrote, “There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death (Prov. 14:12).  Jeremiah warns, “that the way of man is not in himself: it is not in man that walketh to direct his steps” (Jer. 10:23).  Christ stated, “Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not commit adultery: But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart (Mt. 5:27-28).  Paul wrote, “ In like manner also, that the women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with propriety and moderation, not with braided hair or gold or pearls or costly clothing,  but, which is proper for women professing godliness, with good works (1 Tim. 2:9, 10, NKJV);

“In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with broided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array; But (which becometh women professing godliness) with good works” (1 Tim. 2:9-10 KJV)

Modest – The word “modest” means, “Orderly, well-arranged, decent, respectable.” It is an outward sign of inward chastity or purity.

  • In choosing what to wear, the first question the Christian woman must ask herself, “Is it modest”?
  • If it is questionable, she cannot wear it.
  • Where does that leave those who choose to wear nothing?

Shamefacedness  (Shamefastness, ASV)

  • The word “shamefacedness” means, “a sense of shame, bashful, blushing, ashamed.”
  • The Christian woman is conscious of that which could bring shame or disgrace, and avoids it.
  • These words suggest a sense of propriety, a wholesome sense of shame, an awareness of what is fit and what would be inappropriate. (Avon Malone)
  • Shamefacedness is a sense of shame that precedes and prevents any shameful acts (Thayer). It implies self-restraint that a woman imposes on herself to avoid anything that is …unbecoming of a woman professing godliness.
  • Sobriety is the result of this self-restraint (Lipscomb).

Look at the Israelites in Jeremiah’s time – “Were they ashamed when they had committed abomination? nay, they were not at all ashamed, neither could they blush” (KJV) —  “Were they ashamed when they had committed abomination? No! They were not at all ashamed, Nor did they know how to blush (NKJV)

This surely describes those women or men who would dare go topless in public.  As a nation it appears we have lost: our sense of modesty, that which brings shame, that which should cause us to blush with shame, common decency, common sense and most of all our respect for our Creator.

Consider 1 Pet. 3:1-2: “In like manner, ye wives, be in subjection to your own husbands; that, even if any obey not the word, they may without the word be gained by the behavior of their wives; beholding your chaste behavior coupled with fear.”

A basic definition for the word “chaste” is “pure, holy, modest, decent”  – Women are not to rely on outward appearance for their attractiveness, but on the unseen moral excellence of the heart.

Please pray for our nation – our leaders and our people.
